In the footsteps of the Great War

Rossignol

From the Battle of the Frontiers to martyred village

Rossignol was the scene of major clashes between French and German forces during the invasion of Belgium in 1914. The village also suffered reprisals meted out by German troops. By the end of August 1914, Rossignol was a village in torment. Even today, many traces of the past still remain to bear witness to these events.

We invite you to explore a past still visible in the present by following ‘In the footsteps of the Great War’.

A signposted path offering a choice of two itineraries:

  1. The first (7 km) is graded easy, suitable for most walkers: gentle inclines, short section through the woods. Allow 2 hours’ walking time.
  2. The second (9 km, plus additional sections 10 and 14) involves a longer section though the woods and is better suited to more experienced walkers: walking time 3 hours. This path is not available for the moment.

A unique opportunity to explore the history of the First World War in Rossignol.

Along a route made up of some twenty stages, the walk provides an insight into a number of themes: the battles, the key players, the opposing forces, local monuments and the Rossignol region.
